Department of Management
The Department of Management is one of the fastest growing Departments within ITT Dublin. We play a leading role in the provision of management education and by enhancing management skills contributes to strengthening the innovative performance and competitiveness of firms within the region.
The curriculum in the Department of Management covers critical business areas such as innovation, enterprise development, strategic management, law, finance, marketing and Human Resource Management. It is designed to prepare students for the world of business so that they can take up the challenges and contribute effectively as leaders, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs in the workplace.
The Department of Management recently hosted an Economics Forum: Developments in Economics Education in the IOT Sector
The purpose of the Economics Forum is to bring together lecturers within the Institutes of Technology with a view to improving the teaching of Economics at third level.
Dr. Phil Mulvaney, Head of Department of Management:
Economics is a critical area of education and lecturers can and do play a vital role in developing knowledge and skills in this area. The goal of this forum is to share ideas on innovative teaching and programme design. In all academic areas, growth, development and innovation are stimulated by academics coming together to research and share ideas and promote best-practice.
Contemporary models of education have moved towards a more student-centred model of active learning that is based on the development of skills and competencies as well as knowledge. All of this has implications for curriculum design, teaching methods and assessment.
This forum provides an opportunity to learn more about new programme developments and teaching methodologies in economics.
Speakers:
George Lee, as the Guest Speaker, will offer some insights into ‘Communicating Economics in Today’s World. David Mac Williams has said recently that George Lee is the most gifted economics communicator - he is gifted with an ability to communicate an understanding of economic issues to the ordinary person in the street.
The keynote Speaker is Professor John Sloman, who is a well known author and lecturer in Economics. He is Director of the UK’s Higher Education Academy Economics Network which has been supporting learners and teachers in Economics for more than ten years.
Similar networks exist in the US, for example. In Stanford University, The Introductory Economics Center has been in operation since 1997. The main aim of this Economics Center is to promote high quality teaching and innovative program development at the introductory level of economics.
There will be a series of workshops which provide opportunities to discuss developments and in the Institutes of Technology - most of which are represented here today. Some preliminary comparative work has been undertaken as a basis for future sharing and dissemination of knowledge and experience among lecturers within the sector.
The President of IT Tallaght, Pat McLaughlin, highlighted the importance of ethics in economics education saying that it should be incorporated into the curriculum.
